Mom's Break now offers free printables in PDF format that can be personalized (starting April 2008). Some of the PDF free printables are offered in a "rich text format" (RTF) version. To be able to personalize these new PDF free printables and to use the RTF features, you will need Adobe Reader version 8 (recommended at the time of this tutorial, or the newest version now available). This is free software that is available by downloading it from the Adobe website. Go to Adobe Reader to download this version, if you don't already have Adobe Reader 8 or higher.

  • In this sample, the word TEST is bold.

  • In this sample, the word TEST is italic.

  • In this sample, the word TEST is underlined.

  • In this sample, the word TEST is superscripted.

  • In this sample, the word TEST is subscripted.

The "rich text format" feature in Adobe Acrobat allows you to make text bold, italic, and underlined. It also allows you to make text superscripted (above the line) or subscripted (below) the line.

To the left are samples of what text looks like in bold, italic, underlined, superscripted, and subscripted (just in case you are not quite sure what each feature looks like when applied to text).

Some of Mom's Break PDF Free Printables are now available with the rich text format (RTF) feature enabled. To use this feature, as well as to be able to personalize a Mom's Break PDF free printable, you must have Adobe Reader version 8 or higher. If you don't have Adobe Reader, or don't have Adobe Reader 8, then go to the Adobe Reader website to get your free download.

The RTF feature is fairly easy to use. The following tutorial provides step-by-step instructions, using screen shots of the Mom's Break PDF free printable Mother's Day Rose Card as the example.

A link to the Mom's Break Printable Mother's Day Rose Card is provided at the end of this tutorial.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 1.
The rich text feature (RTF) allows you to add some style features to your personalized text. As shown in the example (to the left), you can make words appear to be bold, italic, underlined, or a combination of two of the three styles.
You can also make text superscripted or subscripted (as shown above in the examples), although this may not be something that you would need for personalizing your free printable.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 2.

Before you can add an RTF style, you need to type in your personalized text.

In the example to the left, see "Type in your personalization."

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 3.
To add an RTF style, you need to "highlight" the word (or words) that you want to change.
There are two ways to highlight text:
  • Double-click on the word you want to change.
  • Click the cursor in front of the word(s) you want to change, hold down the mouse button, drag the mouse to the end of the word(s), and then release the mouse button.
In the example to the left, the word "personalization" has been highlighted.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 4.

Once you have highlighted the word(s) you want to change, right click the mouse. A drop-down menu will appear (as shown to the left).

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 5.
Click on the last item in the drop-down menu, Text Style. Another drop-down menu will appear, as shown to the left. The second drop-down menu shows the following styles that you can add to the text that you have highlighted:
  • Bold
  • Italic
  • Underlined
  • Superscript
  • Subscript
  • Clear Formatting
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 6.

To select one of those styles, simply position the cursor over the style you want, and click on that style. That style will now be applied to the highlighted text.

In the example to the left, note that "Bold" has been selected.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 7.
The word "personalization" is now bold.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 8.

If you decide that you don't want the text to appear as bold, you can do one of three things:

  • On the toolbar, click on Edit, and then click on "Undo text style change"
  • Right click on the word that has been changed, click on Text style, and click on Clear Formatting (as shown to the left)
  • Use the "hotkey": Ctrl+Z (hold down the Control Key and hit the Z key)
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 9.
You can apply more than one style to your text. To do so, repeat Steps 3-6, and select the second style you wish to apply.
In the example to the left, the word "personalization" is now bold and underlined.
You can continue to add the text styles as desired by following the same process.
You can undo your changes by following one of the three methods in Step. 8.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 10.

You don't have to add the style(s) to your text as soon as you type the words that you want to show with a style. You can type the entire text and then go back and add styles as desired.

In the example to the left, you can see that several words have been styled.

You can add styles or "undo" styles at any time, even if you have saved the file and go back to it later.

This completes the instructions for adding rich text format styles to your personalized text.
