What better way to start teaching 1+ 1=2 than to use these colorful worksheets with pictures of apples to help children learn? This collection of worksheets provides four sets of worksheets, each set includes two worksheets and one test. The worksheets also help to teach that 1+2 is the same thing as 2+1.

Step 1.

Every math lesson starts with 1+1=2. These worksheets help to illustrate what 1+1 looks like using colorful apples.

This collection of worksheets includes four sets: two worksheets and one test for the following addition lessons:

  • 1+1=2 through 1+9=10 (all addition problems start with 1)
  • 1+1=2, 2+1=3, 3+1=4,...9+1=10 (each addition problems starts with a different number added to 1)
  • 2+1=3 through 2+8=10 (all addition problems start with 2)
  • 1+2=3, 2+2=4, 3+2=5,...8+2=10 (each addition problems starts with a different number added to 2)

The entire collection of worksheets and tests can be downloaded. See Step 6.

Step 2.

Each set of worksheets includes two worksheets and one text. The worksheets are divided into two segments.

Worksheet A of each set includes additional problems for numbers 1 to 6.

The top segment provides the illustration of the addition problem and the addition problem shown in numbers.

The bottom segment asks "What is missing" and the children must either draw the illustration of the addition problem or must write in the addition problem in numbers. As shown to the left, the child must draw one apple, write a plus sign and then draw four apples, showing that all of the apples equal 5.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 3.
Worksheet B of each set includes additional problems for numbers 7 to 10.
The top segment provides the illustration of the addition problem and the addition problem shown in numbers.
The bottom segment asks "What is missing" and the children must either draw the illustration of the addition problem or must write in the addition problem in numbers. As shown to the left, the child write in 1 + 6 = 7 to go with the illustration of one apple plus six apples..
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Step 4.

Each set contains a test, which can be used as a test or as a quiz. As you can see in the illustration to the left, the test alternates between pictures of addition problems and all-number addition problems. The child must "fill in the blank" by writing the number equation or drawing in the corresponding number of apples before and after the plus sign.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teaching Tip!
  1. Buy 10 apples. Cut a plus sign ( + ) out of black construction paper. Draw an equal sign ( = ) on a piece of white paper (or white cardstock, which is a heavier weight paper), then cut out so that there is a white margin around the equal sign.
  2. Use the apples and the plus and equal signs to create the equation on a table. Arrange the apples in any of the equations, and ask "What does this equal?"
  3. Remove the plus and equal signs, group the apples, and then ask the child to create an equation "Arrange the apples to make the equation 1 + 6 = 7."
  4. After the class lesson is over, cut up a couple of apples and enjoy a healthy snack with your students!
Step 5.
All four sets are similar in nature: two worksheets and one test.
Depending on your teaching method, you can do the worksheets as a class activity and use the test for "homework" (during which time, the child attempts to complete the worksheet alone), or you can use all three worksheets as classroom learning tools.
Teaching Tip!
  1. Buy 10 artificial apples, or use 10 balls (any time of rubber ball, or use ten craft foam balls spray-painted red).
  2. Use the same steps as outlined above for making a plus and an equal sign.
  3. Use the artificial apples or the balls to create equations, and for the students to create equations.
Step 6.
All four sets of worksheets and tests, which are available as PDF files, can be downloaded as one zip folder. Go to:
If you are unfamiliar with PDF files, then review this helpful tutorial:
