Food for a Baby Shower should be fun! No one ever pays any attention to calories!

Here's an idea that will turn plain old cupcakes into a colorful treat!

Step 1.

Make your favorite white cake (either from scratch or using a box mix), following the recipe. I used the Betty Crocker white cake mix that included pudding.

To color and decorate the cupcakes you'll need:

  • Food Dye
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Decorated cards (which are business cards printed with the 1-2-3 Baby Shower clipart, print them on blank business cards that are compatible with Avery #8371)

You can download the free template for the cards at: Baby Shower Cupcake Card

Step 2.

Divide the cake batter into three bowls, and color: red, blue, and yellow. I used only enough red food dye so that the batter was a nice pink color.

Put cupcake papers into a cupcake pan or muffin tin.

Fill the papers about 1/2-2/3 full.

Bake at the temperature specified by the recipe. However, remember that cupcakes are likely to bake faster than an entire cake, so you'll want to check the cupcakes after about 15 minutes, and then every 5 minutes or so.

Remove from the oven when a cake tester comes out clean.

Allow cupcakes to cool.

Step 3.

While the cupcakes are cooling, you can print the cards. If you don't have blank business cards, just print them using regular computer paper, and then cut them apart. You will need two cards for each cupcake.

You will also need a glue stick (which I prefer over liquid white glue because the glue stick dries almost instantly, isn't runny, and doesn't make any mess).

Use your favorite frosting---and sprinkles or coconut for a topping if you like!

Step 4.

To assemble the decorations, place one card face down. Rub the glue over the entire back of the card, and press the popsicle stick onto it. Then rub the glue stick on the back of the second card, and glue the second card to the back of the face-down card, trapping the popsicle stick inside.

I found this cute mini-baby bottles in pink, blue, and yellow at my local dollar store. I simply pressed one into the frosting on each cupcake.

Step 5.

Now, insert the popsicle stick into the cupcake!

These cupcakes are guaranteed to disappear...or at least they did after I was done baking them for this craft tutorial---and I wasn't even having a baby shower!

This completes the Baby Shower Cupcakes.
